Step-by-Step Instructions

1
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Peel the potatoes and slice them into 1/8-inch thick rounds. Place the sliced potatoes in a large bowl and sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste.
2
In a large saucepan, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced potatoes and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until they start to soften. Remove the potatoes from the heat and set them aside.
3
In a separate saucepan, melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk to combine. Cook for 1-2 minutes, or until the mixture forms a smooth paste. Slowly add the milk, whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 2-3 minutes, or until it thickens. Remove the bechamel sauce from the heat and set it aside.
4
In a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, create a layer of potatoes. Top the potatoes with a layer of anchovies, followed by a layer of bechamel sauce. Repeat this process until all the ingredients have been used, finishing with a layer of bechamel sauce on top.
5
Sprinkle the breadcrumbs and Parmesan cheese over the top of the casserole. Dot the top of the casserole with butter.
6
Bake the casserole in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until it's golden brown and the potatoes are tender. Remove the casserole from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
