Step-by-Step Instructions

1
Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). In a small bowl, whisk together the char siu sauce, hoisin sauce, soy sauce, sugar, and five-spice powder. Place the pork shoulder in a large zip-top plastic bag and pour the marinade over it. Seal the bag and massage the marinade into the pork, making sure it's evenly coated. Let it marinate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
2
Remove the pork from the marinade and place it on a rimmed baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Roast the pork in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes per pound, or until it reaches an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C). Baste the pork with the pan juices every 20 minutes to keep it moist and promote even browning.
3
While the pork is roasting, prepare the glaze. In a small saucepan, combine the char siu sauce, hoisin sauce, and sugar. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat and cook for 2-3 minutes, or until it thickens and turns into a sticky glaze. Brush the glaze over the pork during the last 10 minutes of roasting.
4
Remove the pork from the oven and let it rest for 10-15 minutes before slicing it thinly against the grain. Serve the char siu pork with steamed rice and a side of stir-fried vegetables for a well-rounded meal.
