Boulets à la Liégeoise (Liege-Style Meatballs)

Boulets à la Liégeoise is a traditional Belgian dish originating from the city of Liège. This hearty and flavorful recipe features large meatballs made with a mix of ground beef and pork, served in a rich and slightly sweet tomato-based sauce. The dish is typically served with boiled potatoes or fries and is a staple of Belgian cuisine. The meatballs are tender and juicy, with a delicate balance of spices and herbs that add depth and complexity to the dish. The sauce is rich and indulgent, with a hint of sweetness from the onions and a tangy kick from the vinegar.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1
Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F). In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, onion, garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, salt, and black pepper. Mix everything together with your hands until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
2
Use your hands to shape the meat mixture into 6-8 large meatballs, depending on how large you want them to be. Place the meatballs on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until browned on the outside and cooked through.
3
While the meatballs are baking, heat the tomato paste in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the canned tomatoes, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Stir everything together and bring the sauce to a simmer.
4
Once the meatballs are done, remove them from the oven and carefully place them in the saucepan with the tomato sauce. Simmer the meatballs in the sauce for 10-15 minutes, or until they are fully coated and the sauce has thickened slightly.
5
While the meatballs are simmering in the sauce, cook the fries according to your preference. You can either deep-fry them or bake them in the oven until crispy.
6
To serve, place the meatballs on a plate and spoon some of the tomato sauce over the top. Serve with a side of fries and a dollop of mayonnaise, garnished with a sprinkle of chopped fresh parsley.
