Step-by-Step Instructions

1
Start by preparing the cabbage leaves. Remove the tough outer leaves and blanch the remaining leaves in boiling water for 5-7 minutes, or until they are tender and pliable. Drain the leaves and set them aside to cool.
2
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, rice, onion, garlic, salt, and pepper. Mix the ingredients together with your hands or a wooden spoon until they are just combined. Be careful not to overmix the meat mixture.
3
To assemble the cabbage rolls, lay a cabbage leaf flat on a work surface. Place a tablespoon of the meat mixture in the center of the leaf and fold the stem end over the filling. Fold in the sides and roll the leaf into a tight cylinder. Repeat with the remaining cabbage leaves and meat mixture.
4
In a large Dutch oven, combine the tomato sauce, cabbage rolls, and enough water to cover the rolls. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer the cabbage rolls for 25-30 minutes, or until they are cooked through and the sauce has thickened.
